Interventions Aren’t Just for Addiction

Most people picture an intervention as something families do for alcohol or drugs. But some of the most urgent situations we see involve no substance at all: a parent whose depression has left them unable to leave the house, an adult child with untreated bipolar disorder cycling through crises, a spouse experiencing psychosis who refuses to see a doctor, a sibling whose eating disorder has become life-threatening. Families in these situations feel just as helpless as families facing addiction — often more so, because they don’t know intervention is even an option.

A mental health intervention follows the same structure as an addiction intervention, adapted for the condition involved. The family is prepared, a treatment placement — psychiatric, residential, partial hospitalization, or outpatient — is arranged in advance, and the conversation is led by an interventionist trained to recognize how specific conditions affect insight and resistance. Someone in a manic episode responds differently than someone in severe depression, and the approach has to account for that. Throughout, the tone is compassionate and non-judgmental. The message is not “something is wrong with you.” It is “we love you and we have help.”

Conditions We Address

We lead interventions for major depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders, severe anxiety and OCD, PTSD and trauma-related conditions, eating disorders, and personality disorders. Many of the families we work with are dealing with co-occurring conditions, where mental illness and substance use feed each other. In those cases, we secure placement in a dual-diagnosis program equipped to treat both at once.

FAQS

Mental Health Intervention

Mental health interventions raise questions that addiction interventions don’t — about diagnosis, about insight, and about what can legally be done when someone refuses care. Here are the questions families concerned about a loved one’s mental health ask most.

Can you intervene if there's no formal diagnosis?
Yes. Many people we help have never been evaluated. Part of the placement process is getting them in front of clinicians who can assess them.
What if my loved one doesn't believe anything is wrong?
Lack of insight is common with several conditions. We prepare the family for it and use approaches designed for people who don't see the problem.
Is this the same as an involuntary commitment?
No. An intervention is voluntary. If someone is an immediate danger to themselves or others, we will guide you on emergency options.
Do you handle co-occurring addiction and mental illness?
Yes. Dual-diagnosis situations are common, and we place your loved one in programs that treat both conditions together.

Why Choose a Professional Mental Health Interventionist

Mental health interventions require an understanding of how specific conditions shape a person’s perception, insight, and reaction to confrontation. A trained interventionist adapts the approach to the diagnosis, coordinates with psychiatric providers, and protects the relationship between your loved one and the family throughout. That expertise makes the difference.
